Administration

Manage the search solution from a simple to use gui interface

Forward Search is delivered with an Administration client, that gives you control of your search solution through a web based GUI interface. Special versions of this Administration client exists for Sitecore and EPiServer, but the generic, Stand-alone version can service any CMS and indeed any custom solution using Forward Search.

The Forward Search Administration client consists of a number of webpages and controls, that are either run as a stand-alone website or, in case of Sitecore and EPiServer, integrated into the CMS administration for easy access.

Index manipulation

The Administration client yields full administrative overview over all indexes and source-setups, displaying status and other vital data for the administrator. From the index overview, re-indexing of single sources or entire indexes can be invoked by a click on a button.

It provides options to easily create new indexes and sources, possibly cloning the existing ones as a means of quickly copying all properties before altering a few of them. Many edit options through well composed dialogs with tool tip and validation applied to all practically editable parameters. This includes the indexes and sources, the schedule entries of the Indexing Scheduler, the Custom Field manager, the Custom Thesaurus and the Geo-spatial settings.

Reporting and monitoring

The Administration client contains important monitoring, reporting and diagnostics tools that delivers important insight in the status of the search solution and indeed the source – the website most often. This includes index status information like last re-indexing timestamp, index statistics, license-issues, webservice issues, empty index detections and missing or corrupt index server control file warnings.

It includes logging viewers and aggregators with reports of broken links and slowly responding webpages. It includes search log aggregators showing Popular Search Words and common “No-Match” queries, that may deliver candidates to the Custom Thesaurus.

Configurable and personalizable

The Administration client is meant to be used by those in charge of the daily monitoring and administration of the indexes. Therefore, it can be customized so as to best support the tasks assigned to those people. The Administration client is fully localizable, allowing it to use the language most appropriate for the user, and its entire gui interface can be customized to display the correct controls collected and shown on any of the interface tabs, yielding a task-oriented gui designed for the specific user or role.

Easy installation – works 100% through existing webservices

The Forward Search Administration client consists of a number of webpages and controls, that are either run as a stand-alone website or, in case of Sitecore and EPiServer, integrated into the CMS administration for easy access. Installation is therefore either a question of unzipping the site and creating an IIS website pointing to it, or, in case of Sitecore and EPiServer, a question of installing a normal package or module into the CMS administration.

The Administration client access the Forward Search configuration data through the webservices provided by the Forward Search webservice solution also used for performing searches. In other words, no extra interfaces needs to be installed or maintained at all, and the Administration client only needs the exact same security settings as the CMS itself does, in order to perform the searches. It is therefore very easy to install and set up the Administration client – simply point it to the same webservice you already have installed for searching.
