Helping visitors finding the right resources and information!

Founded in 1869, Boston Children's Hospital is a 395-bed comprehensive center for pediatric health care. As one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States, Children's offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth through 21 years of age.

Boston Children's Hospital is home to the world's largest research enterprise based at a pediatric hospital. More than 1,100 scientists comprise our research community, including 9 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 11 on-staff members of the Institute of Medicine and 9 members of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Current initiatives have attracted a record $225 million in annual funding, including more federal funding than any other pediatric facility.

Forward Search

Forward Search was chosen as platform for the search solution on the site, for its performance and versatility which fits well the diverse nature of the website, having many different types of contents related to offered services, doctors, health topics, cooperation and research. In the unified search solution, all the different types of content are shown in a single relevance- or date-sorted list, with a handful of top-level category links offered as search-refinement.

Even more user-friendly is the Categorized “Query-As-You-Type” implementation that immediately, as you type, performs searches and suggests the most relevant documents in all available categories and presents them as a “dropdown” list, immediately selectable by the user.

This solution delivers direct links to actual documents in the shown categories as the user types the word searched for, rather than the normal type-ahead suggestions, which just present search terms matching the partial word already entered, making this implementation more user-friendly and accurate than most normal auto-completion solutions.

The solution automatically performs right-truncated wildcard search as text is typed, as always required for well-functioning auto-completion solutions, but this solution actually performs several category-specific wildcard searches into the index in order to bring up the category-sorted list, a task relying heavily on the ultra-fast search speed delivered by Forward Search.
